Human achievements in magnetics

In 1963, humans are able to energize a magnet 200,000 times the power of the earth's magnetic field with 6 car batteries.  But it must be kept at super cool temperatures. Fascinating!  I wonder what these kinds of magnets could do in outer space if you made one the size of a big city block...?
